Understanding Solar Thermal Technology
Overview
The purpose of this programme is to introduce the theory, concepts and the science behind Solar Thermal (hot water) technologies, including the fundamental concepts of solar energy, heating, health and safety, solar thermal circuits, legislation and how solar thermal systems are designed, installed, maintained and commissioned.
This programme is suitable for learners with an interest in sustainable technologies and those who wish to develop the skills necessary for a career in this industry (including those learners studying engineering, plumbing, construction and multi-skills).
Learners who complete the programme are awarded a digital credential from City & Guilds, which states that they can understand sustainable development, clean energy and how to carry out a carbon footprint.

This is an online course and is made up of the following modules:
- Overview and considerations for solar thermal
- Health & safety
- UK & international standards - types of solar collectors
- Options for solar thermal storage
- Designs for solar thermal primary circuits
- Solar thermal primary circuit controls
- Fittings & materials installation
- Filling, commissioning and maintenance
- Final assessment.
Entry requirements
There are no specific entry requirements, however learners should have a minimum of Level 2 in literacy and numeracy or equivalent.
All applicants must live in England and NOT live in one of the locations listed here.
How long is the course?
20 hours over 3 months
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed by online multiple choice assessment. Assessment is by two online multiple-choice quizzes covering the theory and the practical elements of instillation.
