Overview

With over 70,000 HGV driver vacancies across the UK, there has never been a better time to consider a career in logistics.

This FREE* adult-only (19+) part-time course is designed as the perfect pre-employment programme for anyone looking to start a career in the warehouse, storage or LGV driving sector. You will gain essential industry knowledge and nationally recognised certifications that employers are looking for.

You do not need to worry if you have been out of education for some time. Our experienced tutors specialise in supporting adult learners and will guide you throughout your learning journey. You will study in small, supportive classes with other adults, helping you build confidence and develop new skills in a friendly environment.

The course runs at our Derby Road campus and Peter Smythe Transport Training Ltd in Sutton-in-Ashfield, giving you access to industry-standard training facilities.

By the end of the course, you will have the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to take the next step towards employment in this high-demand sector.


What will I study?

The first stage you will cover the following:

  • Logistic Awareness - Level 1
  • Warehousing and Storage and Customer Service - Level 1
  • Skills in Transport and Logistics - Level 1.

This will help you develop proficiencies in:

  • Picking, packing and wrapping goods in a logistics environment
  • Health and safety in the workplace
  • Using manual equipment in logistics facilities
  • Driving hours, health checks and basic tachograph operation
  • Personal wellbeing including stress and anxiety
  • Interview techniques and job seeking skills in the logistics environment
  • DVSA online training – multiple choice, hazard perception & CPC case studies
  • HGV medical.

Start date, attendance and fee 

  • Start date - Tuesday 5 May 2026. Before starting the course, an information and selection day will be held on Wednesday 29 April.
    • This course runs throughout the year, so new dates are to be released soon. 
  • Attendance - TBC
  • Fee - FREE* for adults aged 19 or over.

  • Entry requirements

    This course is only available to adults aged 19+.

    • Prior to starting the course, you will need to attend a selection day where you will complete assessments in numeracy, literacy, and Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) operation to ensure you meet the necessary standards for enrolment in this programme.
    • All applicants must already hold a B car full driving licence with less than six penalty points.

  • Progression

    After successfully completing the first stage, you will then progress onto the NVQ in Driving Goods Vehicles - Level 2 course, a theoretical and practical course where you can gain a Category C (Class 2) large goods driving licence. During this time, you will also be studying online for the DVSA examinations.
