To qualify for a travel pass you must be fully-enrolled onto your course or apprenticeship, or be employed by the college – see the relevant section below.

    New students

As a new student, you will have the opportunity to receive a travel pass smartcard when you come to college to enrol and secure a place on your course.*

If you wish to use your travel pass, you must activate your card on the trentbarton website by creating an account. This will require payment of the relevant amount (if applicable) using a unique identification code, which the college will supply to you via email and text message.

See ‘How do I activate my travel pass?’ FAQ below for details about how to do this.

As a returning student, you can choose to renew your travel pass when you come to college to sign your learning agreement, in readiness for the new academic year.**

Re-activating your card will require payment of the relevant amount (if applicable) on the trentbarton website using a new unique identification code, which the college will supply to you via email and text message.

Please do not attempt to renew your travel pass until you have received your new unique identification code, valid for the 2024/25 academic year, as your previous code will no longer work.

See ‘How do I activate my travel pass?’ FAQ below for details about how to do this.

** Returning students are required to make their own way to college to sign their learning agreements.

    Apprentices

Apprentices who wish to purchase a travel pass should visit the reception at the campus where you study and present your student ID badge as proof of identification. Apprentices studying at the Kirkby Road site in Sutton-in-Ashfield will need to visit the reception at the main construction centre (located at Station Park, Julias Way, off Lowmoor Road, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, NG17 7RB).

Alternatively, apprentices can email employerservices@wnc.ac.uk for further details about how to apply for a pass.

You will then be issued with a travel pass smartcard, which must be activated on the trentbarton website by creating an account. This will require payment of the relevant amount using a unique identification code, which the college will supply to you either in person or by email, depending on your method of contact.

See ‘How do I activate my travel pass?’ FAQ below for details about how to do this.

Apprentices with an existing travel pass who wish to renew it for a further 12 months should visit the reception at the campus where you study, or email employerservices@wnc.ac.uk, to request a new unique identification code and register this on the trentbarton website .

Customers are responsible for their own renewals and trentbarton does not issue reminders. However, bus drivers can tell you the expiry date of your travel pass via the ticket machine on the bus.

    College staff

Staff who wish to purchase a travel pass should visit the reception points at either Derby Road, Chesterfield Road, Station Park, Oddicroft Lane or the Old Brewery to collect a travel pass smartcard.

Upon being issued with your card, you will need to contact the college’s finance team by email at financeofficeteam@wnc.ac.uk to request your unique identification code.

  • How do I activate my travel pass?

To purchase your travel entitlement visit trentbarton.co.uk/westnottscollege , create an account and enter the information required.

This will include inputting the card serial number (the long number printed on the reverse of the smartcard), your unique identification code and your payment details.

Please note: new students can purchase their travel entitlement only after they have received their card and unique identification code, which will be supplied at enrolment if choosing to have a travel pass. Returning students who wish to renew their travel pass are asked to keep their existing card – however, it can be reactivated only after they have received their new unique identification code, which will be provided when they come to sign their learning agreement.

You can choose to pay for your travel pass upfront in full, or monthly through a recurring payment, using a debit/credit card.

Your travel entitlement will then remotely load onto your card.

This video shows the step-by-step process of adding your travel pass product onto your card.

If choosing to pay monthly, the first payment will be made when purchasing the product after enrolment. A second payment will then be taken in the first month of travel, on or around the 20th of the month. This means there will be two payments in the first month, and then seven further payments on or around the 20th of each month through the academic year, making nine payments in total.*

If you qualify for a college bursary or are studying a T-Level programme, the cost of your travel will be free, once you have activated your card on trentbarton’s payment website using your unique code.

Should you experience any issues or difficulties with the purchase or activation process, then please contact trentbarton, the card-provider, by telephone on 01773 712265 or by email at weborders@trentbarton.co.uk to receive assistance.

    Apprentices and college staff only

    * Please note: The travel pass for apprentices and college staff is for 12 months, paid monthly. As the annual cost is heavily discounted, it shouldn’t be cancelled. However, trentbarton will consider applications for cancellations separately, taking individual circumstances into account. This means apprentices commit to paying £43.50 per month for the entire period, and college staff commit to paying £58.50 per month for the duration.

  • What are the benefits of the travel pass?

    - A single travel pass, usable on Stagecoach and trentbarton buses across most of Nottinghamshire and parts of Derbyshire.

    - Significant savings on standard fares.

    - A flexible monthly payment scheme.

    - Unlimited travel all day, seven days-a-week, for the duration of your course – allowing you to take a bus to college, work placements, work experience, part-time jobs, or meet up with friends or family outside of college.

    - Get home more easily from evening events at college such as sport or restaurant activities, homework clubs, societies or evening study in the learning resource centres.

    - Build your confidence, independence and life skills by using public transport.

  • Are there any bus route maps available?

This full network map shows all the buses that operate through Mansfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield. It details the buses that terminate at, or depart from, Mansfield bus station.

This map shows the buses that operate through Sutton bus station (including two drop-off points for route 33, which will mean taking a short walk to the bus station, if required). There is an additional 3c service departing from Sutton Bus Station at 8.15am each college day (term-time only), running to Sutton Junction. Sutton Junction is opposite our Construction Centre and is a short walk from our Engineering Innovation Centre. The 3c will also operate an extra service at 3.50pm and 4.05pm each college day (term-time only) to collect students from Sutton Junction and take them to Sutton bus station. This additional service supplements existing bus routes in the area.

The number 90 travels through Sutton and ends its journey at Mansfield bus station. This service connects our Engineering Innovation Centre (Sutton), Construction Centre (Kirkby), Derby Road campus (Mansfield) and sites in Mansfield town centre including the Sixth Form College, Old Brewery campus, Mansfield Education Hub, and Adult Learning Centre. There is also a term-time only service called the X90. The X90 is a dedicated, college day express journey from Mansfield bus station at 8.10am, arriving at Sutton Junction at 8.25am, opposite our Construction Centre and a short walk from our Engineering Innovation Centre. This timetable shows the pick-up points and times of the 90 and X90 services.

  • When must I purchase a travel pass?

You can purchase your travel pass at any time during your studies or employment and then choose to pay upfront or by a monthly recuring payment.

If choosing to pay monthly, the first payment will be made when purchasing the product. A second payment will then be taken through a recurring payment in the first month of travel, on or around the 20th of the month. This means there will be two payments in the first month, followed by further payments on or around the 20th of each month.

  • If I leave college part-way through the year, can I get a refund?

Because it’s a monthly payment scheme, students pay only for the months that they need the travel pass. This means students can cancel at any time and pay up to the end of the current month. However, you won’t be entitled to a refund covering the remaining part of the month in which you cancel.

Please note: The travel pass for apprentices and college staff is for 12 months, paid monthly.

  • How will I know which bus to catch, from where, and at what times?
  • What if there isn't a direct bus to my college campus?

Unless your bus goes directly to your college campus or nearby, you may need to change buses at Mansfield or Sutton bus stations and take a connecting service to your college site.

  • Where will the buses drop us off?

Buses on college bus routes pull into dedicated bays at either Mansfield or Sutton bus stations.

The bus stop outside the Derby Road campus is named ‘West Notts College’ to make it easier for people not familiar with Mansfield or the campus to recognise when they need to get off their bus.

Sutton bus station has made improvements to its signage to aid student travel. Furthermore, Nottinghamshire County Council will be installing an interactive journey planning screen at the bus station, which will include all West Notts College campuses as ‘quick search’ links to help students plan their journeys.

  • Can I use my travel pass when I’m not at college?

Yes, absolutely! You will be able to use it all day, every day, including evenings and weekends, throughout the period that the travel pass is valid for.

  • What happens if buses are cancelled due to bad weather?

In the event of bad weather, the college will contact Stagecoach and trentbarton to determine whether services are, or are likely to be, affected. We would then decide whether we need to close our campuses – either at an appropriate point in the day, once we are satisfied students, apprentices and staff can get home safely, or early in the morning if the weather has deteriorated overnight. The college would communicate this by text message, Microsoft Teams, our website and social media channels.

  • What if the bus companies go on strike?

Although there would clearly be disruption if some bus services didn’t operate, the college would implement contingency plans to minimise the impact. In the event of a strike, we would make alternative arrangements, such as allowing students who couldn’t get to college to attend their lessons online instead. However, we are not expecting this to happen.

  • What if I lose my travel pass?

Please report lost travel cards to the reception at your college campus. A replacement card will be issued at a cost of £5.
