Human Resources Consultant/Partner - Higher Apprenticeship - Level 5
Overview
CIPD Diploma in Human Resources Practice
On completion, apprentices may choose to register as associate members of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), to support their professional career development and progression.
This role could be called an HR consultant or an HR business partner in different organisations. Individuals in this role will use their HR expertise to provide and lead the delivery of HR solutions to business challenges, together with tailored advice to the business in a number of HR areas, typically to mid-level and senior managers. They could be in a generalist role, where they provide support across a range of HR areas, or a specialist role where they focus on and have in-depth expertise in a specific area of HR likely to be resourcing, total reward, organisation development, or HR operations.
This apprenticeship is geared towards HR practitioners that wish to enhance and expand their knowledge of HR. The apprenticeship route is a great way to get a recognised qualification, but also challenge the practitioner’s thinking to become a strategic partner within the organisation.
Key responsibilities:
- Making decisions and recommendations on what the business can/should do in a specific situation.
- Influencing managers to change their thinking as well as bringing best practice into the organisation.
- Lead the people-related elements of business or HR projects.
On-programme assessment requirements:
- Regular assessment (involving employer and training provider).
- Evidence of 360-degree feedback throughout the programme of study.
- Record of continuous professional development.
- Successful completion of a consultative project.
- Successful completion of a professional discussion.
- Successful completion of CIPD assignments.
Mode of delivery (20% off the job)
Combination of in college and online learning at Vision West Nottinghamshire College, plus project-related learning.
Specialist
Each apprentice will be assigned a designated specialist who will visit them and their line manager every 6-8 weeks at their workplace or through the use of technology such as Skype, throughout the apprenticeship. On alternate months, the specialist will be in contact with the apprentice to coach, mentor and discuss progress.
Entry requirements
The requirement for this apprenticeship will be decided by each employer, but may typically be five GCSEs at grade 4/C or higher.
If the employee does not have maths and English GCSE passes at grade 4/C or above, they will need to pass maths and English Functional Skills Level 2 during their apprenticeship; however a minimum expectation of Level 1 English and Maths initial assessment is required.

How long is the course?
Based on the entry requirements set by the employer the minimum duration for this apprenticeship will be 18 months.

Consultative project
This will be a real example of work carried out by apprentices in their role. It will require the individual to describe how they have applied their knowledge and HR related skills to deliver the services required by the role as described in the standard.
Knowledge to be covered in the project includes:
- HR technical expertise
- Business understanding
- HR function
- MI and technology.
Skills to be covered in the project include:
- HR consultancy
- Providing support and advice
- Contributing to business change
- Building HR capability
- HR information analysis.
In addition there will be the knowledge element from the option chosen by the apprentice.
Professional discussion
The PD will be carried out after the IAO has reviewed and marked the consultative project.
It will focus on skills and behaviours as follows:
- Personal development
- Relationship management
- Flexibility and resilience.
In addition to the above two methods of assessment to achieve the level 5 HR consultant/partner apprenticeship, candidates will be required to complete the assessments for the relevant CIPD modules studied.

Study programmes
It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification.
