Functional Skills English

Functional Skills qualifications are intended for anyone wishing to develop their maths and English. They focus on the underpinning of skills as well as the ability to apply maths and English to different contexts.

Our flexible learning takes place during daytime and evenings at our Adult Learning Centre on Chesterfield Road South in the centre of Mansfield.

Start dates and fees

You can start the course at any time during the year. You can study on a flexible basis, with multiple sessions per week so you are able to attend at times that suit your existing commitments and lifestyle.

What will I study?

Functional Skills English qualifications indicate that you should be able to speak, listen, communicate, read and write with increasing clarity, accuracy and effectiveness at each level. You will be supported to be able to:

  • acquire an understanding of everyday words and their uses and effects, and apply this understanding in different contexts
  • read with accuracy straightforward texts encountered in everyday life and work, and develop confidence to read more widely
  • write straightforward texts and documents with clarity and effectiveness, and demonstrate a sound grasp of spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Entry requirements

You will undertake an initial assessment to determine what level you are currently working at and what level of course is right for you.

How long is the course?

Each course usually takes about 4-6 months, depending on how many sessions per week you attend.

How will I be assessed?

There are two tests at the end of the course, along with a speaking and listening assessment.

What does the course lead to?

Employment or further study.
