Functional Skills English

Overview

Functional Skills qualifications are intended for anyone wishing to develop their maths and English. They focus on both the underpinning skills as well as the ability to apply maths and English to different contexts.  You can study on a flexible basis, with multiple sessions per week available so you are able to attend at times that suit your existing commitments and lifestyle; you can also start the course at any time during the year.

You will undertake an initial assessment to determine what level you are currently working at, and what level course is right for you.  Our flexible learning sessions run during the daytime at our Adult Learning Centre on Chesterfield Road South in the centre of Mansfield, and at our main Derby Road site in the evening.

Entry requirements

You need to undertake an initial assessment but no prior qualifications are needed.

Start dates and fees

You can start at any time during the year, and the course is free for anyone aged 19 or over.

Each course usually takes about 4-6 months, depending on how many sessions per week you attend.

How will I be assessed?

There are two tests at the end of the course, along with a Speaking and Listening assessment.

What does the course lead to?

Employment or further study.

What will I study?

Functional Skills English qualifications indicate that learners should be able to speak, listen, communicate, read and write with increasing clarity, accuracy and effectiveness at each level. They should be able to:

  • Listen, understand and respond to verbal communication in a range of familiar contexts;
  • Acquire an understanding of everyday words and their uses and effects, and apply this understanding in different contexts;
  • Read with accuracy straightforward texts encountered in everyday life and work, and develop confidence to read more widely; and
  • Write straightforward texts and documents with clarity and effectiveness, and demonstrate a sound grasp of spelling, punctuation and grammar.

What can I go on to study?

Higher level Functional Skill or GCSE English.
