Autism and Asperger's Syndrome
The Autism Support Team can provide advice, support, information and guidance for any student at Vision West Nottinghamshire College who has Autism or Asperger's syndrome.
What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong developmental difficulty that affects the way a person communicates and relates to the world around them. People with ASD may experience:
- Difficulties with social interaction
- Sensory difficulties which may impact on learning
- Difficulties with verbal and non-verbal communication
- Difficulties with imaginative or abstract thinking.
What kinds of support can the Autism team offer?
The autism support team can offer students a wide range of services including:
- Advice, guidance and information
- 1:1 support in the classroom
- 1:1 support outside the classroom i.e. break and/or lunch to improve socialisation and communication skills
- Group support in the classroom
- The loan of assistive technology and/or specialist equipment
- Support in exams and with Special Exam Consideration applications
- Help with applications for funding and finance
- Links to other organisations that may be able to help.
Students can request support at any time during their studies. The autism support team will work with students and the appropriate course teams to assess the student's needs and the support required. This will be regularly reviewed.
