The following information will hopefully give you a little bit more of an insight into what it will be like to be a student with us.
-
Where will I study?
Our business courses are based at the Derby Road campus, Mansfield, and have a dedicated area with rooms for study and presentations.
-
What is it like?
The business team are all very experienced in aspects of business themselves and bring a range of expertise to their teaching. The college is an adult, professional environment intended to prepare you to work in your chosen industry. We expect our students to behave in the way that they would in a job with an employer. Attendance and punctuality are very important too. As a business student you will get the chance to meet with some of our local employer partners, so personal presentation and communication will be really important at all levels of study.

What will I study?
The business curriculum gives a varied introduction to the business world, for students who may not know particularly what their next steps may be. You will study finance, marketing, business planning, people management, customer service and business law. Most of the teaching is classroom-based, with some opportunity to visit local employers. You will be involved in project-based working and expected to work in teams with other students and to be able to present your team’s work back to your classmates.
-
What about English and maths?
If you start at college and you haven’t yet achieved your English and maths GCSEs at grade 4 or above, then you will continue to study these alongside your chosen course. At the end of your first year you will take a re-sit GCSE exam. It is important you attend your English and maths lessons alongside your chosen course.
Take a look at our fact sheets to find out why English and maths is important within this industry.

What will I have to wear?
The college does not have a uniform policy so business students can wear whatever they choose to as long as it isn’t offensive. There will be days when you will need to come dressed in business attire, particularly if you are delivering presentations.
-
Will I have to do a work placement?
Work placement in an expectation for business students at levels 2 and 3 and the central work placement team will help you find one. We will try and make sure this is with a business or an area of business that really interests you and is a great way for you to get your foot in the door, impress an employer and potentially move into a job or apprenticeship as a result.
All of our students will be able to also get engaged with our learning companies, which provide in-house opportunities to gain real-world experience. This year students have worked with Mansfield District Council on their ambassador scheme.
