Overview
Throughout the course, we will provide comprehensive theoretical - what you need to know and practical - hands on sessions, to put into practice what you have learnt to ensure a well-rounded understanding of painting and decorating.
You'll have the opportunity to participate in extensive including industry and community-based projects, as well as engaging guest speakers Our esteemed partnerships with industry employers such as Persimmon Homes, Willmott Dixon, Mansfield District Council, and Bolsover District Council will provide exciting work-related opportunities. These partnerships ensure that you develop the skills and expertise that employers in the painting and decorating industry actively seek.
This course is aimed at those who are looking to work in the construction industry, specifically as a craftsperson in painting and decorating. A painter and decorator has the skills and knowledge to use a range of coverings such as paint and wallpaper to enhance and protect surfaces such as plaster, metal and wood and plays an important part of any construction team.
Located at The Old Brewery in the centre of Mansfield, our dedicated construction campus boasts top-of-the-range facilities. With practical areas and classrooms in close proximity, you'll have the perfect environment to refine your specialist skills and techniques relevant to your chosen trade. What will I study?
- Applying and creating colour
- Applying paint materials by brush and roller
- Applying paint systems by brush and roller to non-complex areas
- Applying standard wallpapers and hangings foundation
- Carrying out safe working practices
- Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms
- Health, safety and welfare.
- Preparing surfaces
- Producing specialist decorative finishes
- Producing specialist finishes for decorative work.
Entry requirements
- GCSEs grade 3-9 in English Language and Maths
OR
- Successful completion of a painting and decorating Level 1 or construction related course.
If you are not studying a traditional GCSE programme, we accept alternative qualifications like Functional Skills and vocational courses. If you are not planning on sitting GCSE exams, we can also support you with completing an English Language and Maths assessment. Please contact our admissions team for further details:

If you don't meet the listed entry requirements, you may still be accepted with relevant experience, a strong portfolio, and a commitment to the subject.
Study programmes - essential skills for employment
If you're a student between the ages of 16 and 18 (or 19 to 25 with an EHC Plan) we want to make sure you have the best possible chances of landing an awesome job once you finish college.
Students who haven't achieved a grade 4/C in GCSE maths or English to continue studying these subjects while you're here with us. By doing so, you'll be building a strong foundation of skills that will significantly boost your employability in the future.
Think of it as a chance to supercharge your knowledge and abilities. You'll be equipped with the tools necessary to tackle the world beyond college with confidence. Plus, we'll be right here to support you every step of the way.
In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, all students aged 19 and under and studying a full-time course with us will take part in our study programmes.
