Operations/Department Manager - Professional Apprenticeship - Standard - Level 5


This is a professional apprenticeship aimed at aspiring or existing operations or departmental managers who may already have gained practical experience but wish to further develop their theoretical understanding of management skills.

It is suitable for someone who manages a team and/or projects and achieves operational/departmental goals and objectives. This person will be accountable to a more senior manager or business owner and will be responsible for leading and managing teams, managing change, financial and resources management and coaching and mentoring.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above including maths and English.

Employers who pay the apprenticeship levy can use their payments to cover course fees and assessment.

If your organisation doesn’t pay the levy, you can still access government funding to cover at least 90% of fees.

How long is the course?

There are eight units studied over two years.

How will I be assessed?

A combination of on-programme assessment and end-point assessment. On-programme assessment will include:

  • Assignments/reports/presentations – to make up a portfolio.
  • Review of performance between apprentice and line manager.
  • 360° feedback.
  • Continual professional development log.
  • Work-based project.

End-point assessment will include:

  • Independent review of portfolio.
  • Written test using a series of different scenarios and situations.
  • Presentation and Q&A.
  • Interview and professional discussion.

Sample programme:

Weeks 1-3

In order to maximise the potential benefits to the business a series of taught sessions will be an integral of each unit. These taught sessions are led by the tutor in the university centre and will typically run from 9am to 1pm for the first three weeks of each unit. The sessions will enable apprentices to develop a detailed knowledge and understanding of the business theory and how it relates to their own workplace. The first three weeks of the unit provide the foundation necessary for learners to put into practice their learning when producing their assignments. Assignments will be introduced and work set by the tutor for the learners to complete on an individual basis.

The programme allows flexibility for the apprentice to return to work after 1pm or remain in the university centre to complete assignments.

Weeks 4-7

The tutor will visit each learner twice during these four weeks, to conduct one-to-one meetings at the learner’s workplace. This provides the opportunity to support the learner in the completion of their assignments and to liaise with the employer to assess development of the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the qualification.

Weeks 8-9

The tutor will be available in the university centre 9-4pm for one-to-one support for apprentices completing coursework. These are flexible sessions with attendance on a drop-in basis.

Week 10

Submission of coursework and introduction to next unit. This will take place at the university centre 9-12pm.

Employer commitment

An employer must be prepared to provide the learner with the opportunity to carry out their work and be involved in new projects which will enable the learner to produce evidence towards their qualification.

Employer involvement is very important for the learner to achieve success and this will mean a series of reviews of the learner’s progress towards meeting specific outcomes. This ensures continued progress through the apprenticeship by resolving issues and providing challenges for the learner.

  2. Principles of Management and Leadership
  3. Managing and Leading Individuals and Teams
  4. Creating and Delivering Operational Plans
  5. Managing Finance
  6. Managing Stakeholder Relationships
  7. Managing Projects
  8. Managing Change.

Study programmes

It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification.
