Overview

Have you dreamt of teaching at a high level? Maybe you want to report on current event as a journalist? Whatever your interest, this course can provide you with the opportunity to pursue a variety of passions at university including history, English, teaching and journalism.  

Humanities is a diverse subject area with different areas including the arts, history, philosophy, languages and literatures. This course is designed to help you gain an understanding of humanities through a range of topics including psychology, history, literature, criminology and more.

The Access to HE Diploma (Humanities) course is intended for adults (aged 19+) who have been out of education for some time and want to get the skills and qualifications to progress onto Higher Education.

This full Level 3 nationally recognised qualification prepares you without the need for traditional qualifications and provides you with the opportunity to gain and enhance vital industry knowledge and skills. You will also develop the communication skills and confidence necessary for success in university-level 

You could complete this course within one year if you are able to dedicate 10 hours per week. However, this is flexible depending on what hours you can commit.  Most students complete this course within 12-18 months.

The awarding body for this course is the Skills and Education Group (SEG).


How will I learn?
The majority of your learning will be based entirely online, giving you the flexibility of being able to study when it is convenient for you. You will also have the opportunity to attend college for study skills sessions and mandatory comprehensive induction, introducing you to both the college and the online learning platform.

This course is eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan
The Advanced Learner Loan is a new scheme introduced by the government to help mature learners study for qualifications that will improve their employability and develop high level skills and knowledge.

Loans are specifically designed for those aged 19 and over, who are intending to study on a Level 3 or higher course – including Access to HE Diplomas.

Best of all, if you successfully go on to complete an HE qualification following an Access to University course – you won’t even have to pay the loan back.

If you are aged 19 or over and either studying a second Level 3 course or qualifying Level 4, 5 or 6 course you may be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the costs.

Before you start your studies with us on the Access you will be required to complete the Blended Pre-Access. This short one week course will give you an insight into what is covered on the Access to HE and provide you with tips and strategies of how to succeed in your studies. It will give you a good understanding of the type of study you will undertake and help you decide if you are indeed ready for the Access to HE course. On completion of the Blended Pre-Access you will then need to attend a review and induction before commencing the Access to HE course.


Entry requirements

  • *A minimum of two GCSEs at grade 4-9 in English Language and Maths.

How long is the course?

  • 1 year (flexible) - approx. 10 hours per week.

Most students complete between 12 -18 months, but this is dependent on the amount of time dedicated to studying each week which is determined by the learner.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed on the assignments that are set regularly throughout the course - completed in your own time.

To successfully achieve this Access to HE Diploma, you will need 60 credits in total. The credits are split into the following two categories:

  • Graded – 45 credits come from graded units, which focus on the academic subject
  • Ungraded – 15 credits come from ungraded units, such as writing and study skills.

What does the course lead to?

There are a range of humanities related courses available to progress onto including law, education, journalism and many others.
As we are a partner college of Nottingham Trent University (NTU), you may qualify for various benefits should you choose to apply to NTU after completing your college course. This could include a Progress NTU offer, where you would receive an offer one grade below their standard offer. For instance, a typical offer for one of their courses might require 128 UCAS tariff points. With Progress NTU, your requirements would be 120 UCAS tariff points.
