Mathematical Studies (Certificate) - Level 3
Overview
This course is only one year and worth half the UCAS points of an A Level.
Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) is a one-year certificate course aimed at students who don’t want to take A Level Maths but wish to build on their GCSE knowledge and skills. Students learn about mathematical applications affecting daily life – such as personal finance – and contributing to many aspects of study and work, like understanding and using data.
The skills learnt on this course can help students studying A Levels in the sciences, business studies, economics, geography and psychology.

What will I study?
On this course, there is a strong emphasis on developing problem-solving skills for real life such as finances, at work and studying.
Entry requirements
- GCSE Maths at grade 5-9
- Plus, four other GCSEs at grade 4-9 including GCSE English Language.

If you're a student between the ages of 16 and 18 (or 19 to 25 with an EHC Plan) we want to make sure you have the best possible chances of landing an awesome job once you finish college.
Students who haven't achieved a grade 4/C in GCSE maths or English to continue studying these subjects while you're here with us. By doing so, you'll be building a strong foundation of skills that will significantly boost your employability in the future.
Think of it as a chance to supercharge your knowledge and abilities. You'll be equipped with the tools necessary to tackle the world beyond college with confidence. Plus, we'll be right here to support you every step of the way.
In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, all students aged 19 and under and studying a full-time course with us will take part in our study programmes.
How long is the course?
One year.
How will I be assessed?
This course is assessed solely by examination, with exams scheduled for May/June at the end of the year.
What does the course lead to?
This course gives you more UCAS points which can be used towards a wide range of degrees and enhances your maths skills for any career helping to increase your desirability for future job roles.
What can I progress onto?
This course has been known to help students stand out who are looking at further study at university level*. Subjects studied include maths, business, accountancy, science, computing, engineering or economics.

This could include a Progress NTU offer, where you would receive an offer one grade below their standard offer.
