Careers advice is still ‘first class’ at college

Posted: 03 July 2019

The careers advice and guidance team at West Nottinghamshire College has been recognised and re-accredited with the Matrix Standard, after holding it since 2007.

The Matrix Standard is the industry benchmark for organisations who provide information, advice and guidance services (IAG), to support individuals with their choice of career, learning, work and life goals.

Members of the careers and employability team all hold professionally-recognised career guidance qualifications and are highly-experienced within career development which enables them to provide a range of services, not only to students, but to school leavers and the wider community.

One of the tools used to measure the careers team’s service and subsequent impact is through an exit survey. The results from 2017/2018’s exit survey shows that:

  • 98% of students felt encouraged to think about their future career
  • 96% of students knew where to go for support if they needed it
  • 95% of students received the support they needed to help them progress
  • 94% agreed that they were prepared for their chosen next steps.

The careers and employability team has been given credit for their impartial and client-focussed approach to providing IAG and how they demonstrate a commitment and dedication to the range of clients they support.

The team’s delivery of IAG and how they successfully combine realistic and relevant decision making whilst maintaining students’ aspirations was also given credit.

In addition, the team’s overall provision and robust approach of recording their client’s goals, barriers, options, aspirations as well as their next steps and timelines for both the student and the advisor were also given high praise.

The employability and progression manager Maxine Buttery said: “We are absolutely delighted to achieve the Matrix standard again. It shows both students and our communities can be assured of impartial guidance from a highly-qualified team of professionals who collectively have over 100 years’ worth of experience in the industry.”

“I am very proud of the team and their continued dedication and enthusiasm assisting students in making appropriate and informed careers decisions and choices.”
