Jordan’s proud of his joinery hat-trick

A joinery and construction student from West Nottinghamshire College is celebrating a hat-trick of awards which he has scooped in just six months.
Jordan Harrison, 20, from Stanton Hill, Sutton-in-Ashfield, began the academic year in September by achieving the prestigious City & Guilds Medal of Excellence after being nominated by his tutor Andy Whyley, for his dedication to his studies.
Jordan was the only student within Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire to scoop this award and one of just 86 people in the world to receive it. The Medals for Excellence have been awarded by City & Guilds for more than 100 years to lecturers and students who show exceptional dedication to learning.
Following this, Jordan was proud to take home the City & Guilds Lion Award in January, which was presented to him at the Guildhall in London by HRH The Princess Royal and the Right Honourable Lord Mayor of London, Alderman Peter Estlin.
At the glittering event, Jordan discovered that out of all the Lion Award winners, he was chosen as a national winner – Learner of the Year – one of just five national prizes presented on the day.
Then in March, Jordan learnt he’d been selected for the joiners’ and ceilers’ award. The awards ceremony took place on Monday 11 March at Carpenters' Hall, London. Jordan was unable to attend due to being on an Erasmus+ visit to a college in Estonia which the college had organised.
It was City & Guilds’ Midlands regional account manager Debs Wray, who attended on Jordan’s behalf to collect the award. Debs said: “It was an honour for me to collect the award for Jordan and to come to meet him again at the college. He really is an inspiration for many learners. I’ve never known a student to get all three awards – it really shows how hard he’s worked."
Jordan, who is working as a bench joiner for Mansfield-based commercial joinery specialists, Realm Projects, said: “It’s quite overwhelming when I think about getting all three awards in such a short space of time. Part of the prize was £500 which was an additional surprise when Debs passed on the award. I’ve had a great time at the college and I’d love to come back to study on the HNC.”
