Four paws applause for students’ kind cash

Posted: 15 May 2019

The profits from a student-led Easter market at West Nottinghamshire College were presented to a local animal charity this week.

Kind-hearted learners who are studying practical work skills programmes at the college’s Derby Road campus hosted an Easter craft market back in March featuring home-made cakes, hand-made crafts, a tombola and a name the bunny prize game.

Yesterday (15 May), Cathy Robinson, the community fundraiser from the Jerry Green Dog Rescue centre in Blidworth, visited the students to gratefully receive a cheque for £105.

Students presented Cathy with a large cheque, having chosen the Jerry Green’s as their preferred charity.  They were able to meet Lily, a resident at the centre who has come through the rescue system.

Cathy said: “This is a wonderful gesture by the students and the money will be going towards vets’ fees, food and general care of our dogs.

“We can home 27 dogs at any time and we receive animals from people who have moved into rented accommodation which won’t allow pets, or elderly people who can no longer care for a dog and sometimes we receive strays which go to the pound first to see if owners collect.

“Ours is a closed kennel so we ask people to look on our website to see which dog may be suitable for their home environment and we have a matching process to ensure the right dogs go to the right families. Lily came through our system and she was quite poorly with ear, eye and skin infections.  Happily she’s well again and we hope she can be rehomed in the future.”

Foundation studies co-ordinator Denise Sanderson said: “Our students had a wonderful time running the Easter market and we’ll definitely do it again. We tried to encourage the more shy members of the group to speak to customers and talk about their products and they loved it! They were very keen to donate all proceeds to Jerry Green’s as they’re real dog lovers.”
