Student actors time travel to London’s Drury Lane Theatre

Posted: 12 June 2018

West Nottinghamshire College’s performing arts students will be stepping back a few centuries as they go back to the early days of London’s Theatre Royal in their forthcoming production of A Laughing Matter.

On Wednesday 20 June, Performing Arts (Acting) Level 3 Diploma Year 2 students will be transporting audiences back to 1773 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. The crowd is getting restless. The leading man's unconscious but the show must go on.

This irreverent version of real-life events tells the story of David Garrick, Samuel Johnson, Oliver Goldsmith and a new play called She Stoops to Conquer. Caught between financial pressures and artistic ambition, Garrick must decide if he can risk staging a play that could make or break his career.

In 1747, the first modern actor, Garrick, became the patent holder and manager of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, one of only two theatres in London.

A Laughing Matter was produced by Out of Joint and the National Theatre, London. Following its premiere at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford, in October 2002, it transferred to the National in November and returned in February 2003.

The student production is presented by special arrangement by Samuel French Ltd. Tickets cost £5 per person and can be purchased at www.createtheatre.co.uk or by calling 01623 413363.
