Seventeen-year-old Sara Kicks, from Tibshelf, has been selected to attend The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) in Surrey, once she’s completed her education and Dame Asha presented her with the official scholarship certificate last week (30 March).

Currently studying her A Levels in psychology, English literature and sociology at the college, Sara underwent medical tests and intensive physical challenges at Sandhurst last summer, as well as taking personality and aptitude tests, with a view to her applying to become a medical support officer.

Before joining RMAS, which was formed in 1947 after descending from older Royal Military Academy and the Royal Military College, Sara will become a student at Loughborough University where she’ll study a degree in psychology.

Sara said: “I enjoyed the training at Sandhurst as intense as it was. I originally applied to be a medic but I was over-qualified and was advised to apply to become an officer and look towards leading people so I’m aiming to be a medical support officer where I’ll be in charge of medics and have a troop of my own.

“I feel very proud to have been accepted on the scholarship, but for now I’m concentrating on my A Level exams and my forthcoming degree at Loughborough University and I’ve heard they have a very good sports facility which I’ll be using because I’ll need to be at my prime fitness for Sandhurst.”

Dame Asha, who met with Sara to present her certificate to her in front of her class, said: “Sara’s success is just amazing. She set her mind for the challenge, endured the competitions and has found success and now the sky really is the limit.

“This is a very proud moment for me and Sara’s tutors and class and it’s the first time in my life I’ve seen someone be accepted to Sandhurst. We wish her all the success in the world.”
