Get up and glow for sport with a difference

Students at West Nottinghamshire College put the game of badminton under a different spotlight this week.
Childcare and travel and tourism students enjoyed the first round of Raveminton in the sports hall
Raveminton has been launched by the college’s sport development team in a bid to introduce more students to a wide range of sports offered at the college.
The sport brings the traditional game of badminton together with UV light, fluorescent bibs and headbands as well as lining the court with fluorescent strips and music, transforming the game into a more social activity.
With the support of £1,500 from Sportivate funding, it means this equipment can now be used for future Raveminton games and other sports. Sportivate is a £56 million lottery funded programme that gives more young people the chance to discover a sport that they love.
Yesterday (12 January) childcare and travel and tourism students at the college joined in the colourful fun during their lunchtime.
Travel and tourism student Corinne Arthur, 16, said: “I’ve played badminton before and quite liked it. This glow version gives it more of an atmosphere. We’d dress up more to get the full effect of the UV light – it’s great fun!”
Sport maker Rob Pearce said: “This first session went really well. Everyone was very excited and the atmosphere gave students a push to try something new.
“Funding through Sportivate has helped us buy the equipment for Raveminton and we can also adapt the equipment to use it in different sports. We’re looking forward to welcoming more students – maybe even staff members – to these fun Thursday lunchtime games.”
