Women in Construction (Free) - Level 1
Overview
This FREE 12-week course is tailored for women who are considering a career in the construction industry or wishing to learn basic skills for household DIY projects. The course provides a range of basic training concentrating on the main elements of the industry in a small supportive women only environment.
Qualifications gained:
- Level 1 Award Health and Safety in a Construction Environment
- Level 1 Diploma Construction Skills
Upon completion you will have the option to advance your skills by pursuing a Level 2 course in one of the main construction trades.

The course runs on Thursday and Fridays from 9.00am-4.00pm.
Cost
- FREE - The college will cover the cost of training, test and the CSCS card (on successful completion of the course).
What will I study?
Health and Safety (Level 1 Qualification)
- Overview of safety protocols in construction
- Understanding and implementing health and safety regulations
- Practical applications in a construction setting.
Bricklaying
- Introduction to basic bricklaying techniques
- Hands-on experience in brickwork construction
- Understanding different types of bricks and mortar.
Joinery
- Essential principles of joinery
- Hands-on practice with basic joinery tools
- Building foundational skills in woodworking.
Plastering
- Basics of plastering techniques
- Application and smoothing of plaster on different surfaces
- Understanding the role of plastering in construction.
Tiling
- Introduction to tile types and materials
- Practical tiling skills for various surfaces
- Grouting and finishing techniques.
Plumbing
- Basics of plumbing systems and components
- Hands-on experience in basic plumbing installations
- Understanding plumbing safety practices.
Painting and decorating
- Fundamentals of painting and decorating
- Hands-on experience with different painting techniques
- Choosing colour schemes and applying finishes.
Entry requirements
- There are no specific entry requirements to study this course.
- Please note - this course is for women aged over 19 only (as of August 2024)
How long is the course?
12 weeks.
How will I be assessed?
You will be required to undertake a test at the end of the course which demonstrates your achievement of all of the learning outcomes and course criteria for the qualification.
The qualification is graded pass or fail.
