Introduction to Motor Vehicle Maintenance

Overview

Do you have an interest in cars and want to learn more about them? If the answer is yes, then this is the course for you. The course is designed to give you an introduction to some basic maintenance procedures, requred to maintain the safe running of a household car.

You will gain hands on experience in our state of the art garage, where you will learn how to safely carry out some basic servicing and repair tasks such as changing your spare wheel, checking your fluid levels, making sure your car is safe and prepared for winter and summer driving.

*Anyone who is unemployed and in receipt of a qualifying means-tested benefit, or who is employed and earning less than £20,319, will get the course for free.


What will I study?

You will learn to work safely in our modern garage, where you will gain practical hands on experience in basic home maintenance techniques, including:

  • Changing wheels
  • Checking tyres for road worthiness and legality
  • Changing bulbs and fuses
  • Checking fluid levels such as engine oil, brakes and power steering, topping up where necessary

You will be able to ask our friendly, experienced tutors those burning questions that you always wanted to know the answers to.


Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course just an interest to attend and learn about cars.


How long is the course?

The course is 2 hours per week, from 6-8pm on Thursday evenings for 6 weeks.


How will I be assessed?

There are no formal assessments for this course.


What does the course lead to?

The course will provide you with some of the skills and knowledge that will help you to make an informed decision on your future progress. You will be able to discuss your next steps with your tutors.


What can I progress onto?

You can go on to study other higher level motor vehicle courses which will further develop you knowledge and skills within the industry:

  • Level 1 Award in Motor Vehicle
  • Level 2 Award in Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Safety
  • Level 2 diploma in Light Vehicle Repair and Maintenance
  • Level 3 diploma in Light Vehicle Repair and Maintenance
