Functional Skills English (On-campus - Free)
Overview
This FREE course is intended for anyone wishing to develop their English ability and will focus on basic skills and how to apply them in everyday life. You can progress through the Functional Skills levels which can then lead to gaining a nationally recognised qualification such as GCSE English.

You can study on-campus with daytime and evening study options available at our Adult Learning Centre. This is your chance to learn maths at your own pace in small groups in a discreet and supportive environment.

Start dates and fees
You can start the course at any time during the year. You can study on a flexible basis, with multiple on-campus sessions per week so you are able to attend at times that suit your existing commitments and lifestyle.
Daytime
- Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10.00am-12.30pm.
Evening
- Mondays and Thursdays, 5.30-7.00pm
- Tuesdays, 6.30-8.00pm.

What will I study?
Functional Skills English qualifications indicate that you should be able to speak, listen, communicate, read and write with increasing clarity, accuracy and effectiveness at each level. You will be supported to be able to:
- listen, understand and respond to verbal communication in a range of familiar contexts
- acquire an understanding of everyday words and their uses and effects, and apply this understanding in different contexts
- read with accuracy straightforward texts encountered in everyday life and work, and develop confidence to read more widely
- write straightforward texts and documents with clarity and effectiveness, and demonstrate a sound grasp of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Entry requirements
You will undertake an initial assessment to determine what level you are currently working at and what level of course is right for you.
How long is the course?
4-6 months, depending on how many sessions per week you attend.
How will I be assessed?
There are two tests at the end of the course, along with a speaking and listening assessment.
What does the course lead to?
Employment or further study.
