Digital and IT Short Courses (Adults aged 19+)

Overview

If you want to improve your digital and IT skills but don’t know where to start, our short courses are perfect for you.

These courses are designed as a pathway for people with little or no digital and IT skills to gain confidence and become digitally-literate with the option to progress all the way through to completing the Essential Digital Skills qualification.

These courses can be studied for FREE (subject to course and eligibility). All learners are encouraged to contact the adult learning and skills team to determine your current skill level and offer suggestions of which course(s) are best suited to you. You may also be asked to complete an initial assessment at our Adult Learning Centre in the Four Seasons Shopping Centre.


Stage 1

First Steps in Digital

  • Cost: FREE* or £7 per hour

Do you have questions about digital skills and how to learn them?

These drop in sessions are the perfect opportunity for you to ask your burning questions around all things IT or join a class for those with no IT skills. As part of a class, you will learn basic to advanced skills with a focus on Microsoft Office in very small groups alongside a supportive tutor.

Interested? These drop in sessions are FREE or £7 per hour for everyone aged 19+ and run throughout the year. Contact us on 01623 413602 to book a session.

After reaching an adequate skill level, you can progress on to our stage two course, Demystifying Digital: IT for the terrified (below).


Stage 2

Demystifying Digital: IT for the terrified

  • Where: Four Seasons Shopping Centre (NG18 1SU)
  • When: Fridays | 9.00-11.00am
  • Cost: FREE* or £25

Do you have no IT skills and scared to try in case you break something?

This four-week course is an ideal opportunity for you to overcome these worries. As part of the course, you will learn basic digital and IT skills in very small groups alongside a supportive tutor.

Interested? These drop in sessions are £25 or FREE* for everyone aged 19+ and run throughout the year. Contact us on 01623 413602 to confirm when the course is running and discuss how many sessions to take (currently we suggest around four sessions or eight hours).

After completing this course, you can progress on to our stage three course, Introduction to Digital Skills (below).


Stage 3

Introduction to Digital Skills

  • Where: Four Seasons Shopping Centre (NG18 1SU)
  • When: Fridays | 1.00-3.00pm
  • Cost: FREE* or £75

OR

  • Where: All Saints Centre (NG17 2JT)
  • When: Tuesdays | 11.00am-1.00pm
  • Cost: FREE* or £75

This 11-week course will give you an introduction to Microsoft Office products such as Word, PowerPoint and Outlook as well as increasing your confidence in the use of online platforms and services, ensuring you are aware of how to use these platforms safely to protect your personal data. You will get the chance to learn the IT skills you need in very small groups alongside a supportive tutor.

Stage 4

Essential Digital Skills - Entry Level to Level 1

  • Where: Four Seasons Shopping Centre (NG18 1SU)
  • When: Tuesdays | 2.00-4.00pm
  • Cost: FREE*

Looking to bridge your digital knowledge gaps and learn vital skills for today’s technology focussed world?

This accredited course is a perfect opportunity to learn a variety of digital skills including using devices and handling information, creating and editing, communicating and more. This qualification is mapped to the national standards for essential digital literacy to help create the digitally-literate workers of the future.

* Tuition fees are waived for adults who are aged 19 and over (on 31 August 2023) and are unemployed and in receipt of qualifying benefits, or are employed and earning less than £20,319 per year.


What can I progress onto?

Upon completion of these courses, you will have the necessary skills and confidence to progress onto the Essential Digital Skills qualification.

This qualification will bridge your digital knowledge gaps and provides vital skills needed in today’s technology focussed world. You could then progress from this qualification to further study such as our Access to University courses or employment.
