Certificate in the Principles of Dementia Care (FREE Distance Learning Course) - Level 2

Overview

This qualification develops learners’ knowledge and understanding of what dementia is and how to support individuals with dementia, including understanding a range of theoretical models of dementia and types of dementia.

Learners will look at the role of carers in the care and support of individuals and dementia.  In particular, the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person centred approach, how to communicate with individuals who have dementia and understand behaviour in the context of dementia.

The benefits of engaging in activities are also explored.

This qualification is intended to update and continue the professional development of learners and to develop knowledge/skills relevant to occupational specialisation.

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements, however learners should have a minimum of Level 1 in literacy and numeracy or equivalent.

This qualification is suitable for learners of 16 years of age and above.

Start dates and fees

This course is currently free for adults aged 19 and over, no matter what your current employment or benefits status is.

How long is the course?

Total time to achieve this qualification is 150 hours.

Guided learning hours for this qualification is 123. These hours are made up of all contact time, guidance or supervision of a tutor.

Directed learning hours for this qualification is approximately 27 hours over the cycle of the programme. Learners are expected to study and do aspects of their assessment portfolio in their own time.

How will I be assessed?

The qualification is assessed by internally set and marked assessments subject to external quality assurance.

All learning outcomes and assessment criteria must be met to achieve a Pass – there is no grading.

This course is made up of a series of mandatory units:

  • Dementia Awareness
  • The person centred approach to the care and support of individuals with dementia
  • Understand behaviour in the context of dementia
  • Understand equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care
  • Understand the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person centred approach.
