Certificate in Understanding Retail Operations (Online) - Level 2

Overview

The purpose of this qualification is to develop learner’s knowledge and understanding of the retail sector and to provide an introduction to the retail industry to those recently employed or seeking employment in the sector.

The distance learning courses are completely free for anyone aged 19 or over (on the 31st August 2023), irrespective of their current employment status, but applicants must live in the UK in a non-devolved area. Applicants aged 19-23 must already have a full level 2 qualification to be eligible.

Please note, if you fail to reach the end of the course, you may be subject to a £125 admin fee.


What will I study?

This course is made up of a series of mandatory units:

  • Understanding how to deal with customer queries and complaints in a retail environment
  • Understanding customer service in the retail sector
  • Understanding how a retail business maintains health and safety on its premises
  • Understanding how individuals and teams contribute to the effectiveness of a retail business
  • Understanding retail customer law
  • Understanding the retail selling process

Optional units are as follows:

  • The principles of food safety for retail
  • Underage sales prevention for retails and licensed premises
  • Understanding environmental sustainability in the retail sector
  • Understanding how stocks of newspapers and magazines are controlled in retail outlets
  • Understanding how the effectiveness of store operations can be improved
  • Understanding security and loss prevention in the retail business
  • Understanding the control, receipt and storage of stock in the retail business
  • Understanding the fashion retail market
  • Understanding the management of stock for customer orders in business to business services
  • Understanding the storage, monitoring and replenishment of fresh product in a retail outlet
  • Understanding visual merchandising for retail business

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements, however learners should have a minimum of Level 2 in literacy and numeracy or equivalent.

All applicants must live in England and NOT live in one of the locations listed here.


How long is the course?

Total time to achieve this qualification is 180 hours.

Guided Learning hours with a tutor make up 112 of this time, with a further 68 hours for leaners to complete aspects of their assessment portfolio in their own time.

How will I be assessed?

The qualification is assessed by internally set and marked assessments subject to external quality assurance.

All learning outcomes and assessment criteria must be met to achieve a Pass – there is no grading.
