Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Automation and Robotics Engineering) (Intermediate) - Level 2


This course covers a range of core skills and knowledge including how to program and operate robots to perform a variety of tasks. You will also learn how to use CAD software to produce technical drawings and 3D models as well as the principles of 3D printing technology to produce parts. The course will develop skills and knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

We deliver high quality skills for the future across the areas of electrical, mechanical and maintenance engineering with an advanced manufacturing emphasis as per the local and regional employment demand.

This course has been designed to support the development of aspiring engineers in a variety of practical skills disciplines, enhancing opportunities for you to move into the world of work.

This programme also dovetails perfectly into our engineering apprenticeship standards. It allows employers in the local area the opportunity to sponsor excelling students, prior to an apprenticeship sign up and complete work experience in a real engineering environment.

If you have aspirations to move on to university, this course gives excellent core engineering skills, whilst developing GCSE maths and English (if required) to move onto  our Level 3 programme. This offers seamless transition to move on to a higher education level of study.

What will I study?

  • Working to engineering drawings to produce components
  • Using electrical circuits, making components as used in drones, 3D printers and cars.
  • Operating lathes and milling machines to produce tools
  • Using CAD software and 3D printing technology.

You will also obtain skills in the following:

  • You will learn how to use CAD software to create 3D models and technical drawings
  • Develop skills and knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems such as those found in aircraft landing gear and automated production lines
  • You will learn the principles of 3D printing and use the latest 3D printing technology to produce a range of parts
  • Learn how to operate and program industry standard robots to perform a variety of automated operations.

Entry requirements

  • A minimum of three GCSEs at grade 3 in English language, maths and science.

If you are a young person who is not currently studying a traditional GCSE programme, we will consider alternative qualifications such as functional skills and vocational qualifications.

  • If you do not have the entry requirements listed above you may still be accepted to study if you can provide relevant experience, a strong portfolio of work and a commitment to the subject.

Study programmes - essential skills for employment

As an entry requirement on some of our courses, you will need a GCSE in both English and maths with at least a grade 4/C (please see entry requirements above).

If this isn’t displayed under the entry requirements and you don’t currently have a GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4/C or above before joining us, you will then study English and maths as part of your programme with the aim of achieving a qualification with at least a grade 4/C. This is to help improve your chances of employment once you leave us.

In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, all students aged 19 and under and studying a full-time course with us will take part in our study programmes.

How long is the course?

1 year.

How will I be assessed?

During this programme, you will complete three mandatory units and four optional units to obtain the full diploma qualification.

Assessments are carried out using a combination of practical and knowledge based activities, whilst occupational behaviors will also be expected.

All work being assessed will be via written work reports, knowledge questionnaires and practical observations.

Assessed pieces, in some subjects, will be physical items that can be taken away as souvenirs of your experience, for you to demonstrate to employers the skills and abilities you have obtained.

This course will give you the hands on experience and skills to move into a variety of engineering related roles within the automotive, automation, aerospace, distribution, manufacturing, motorsport and robotics.
