AAT Business Tax - Level 4
Overview
This unit introduces you to UK taxation relevant to businesses. You will understand how to compute business taxes for sole traders, partnerships, and limited companies, and how to identify tax planning opportunities while understanding the importance of maintaining ethical standards.
Tax advice is an important part of many accountancy roles in recognising tax planning opportunities for businesses. You will discuss the ethical issues facing business owners and managers in reporting their business tax and the responsibilities that an agent has in giving advice on tax issues to business clients.

What will I study?
During your study of how to prepare tax computations, you will:
- Identify expenditure as revenue or capital and adjust accounting profits for tax purposes
- Allocate profits between partners in a partnership and calculate National Insurance Contributions (NICs) for the self-employed, advising clients on the tax implications of making losses
- Understand the administrative requirements of UK tax law, including the implications of errors in tax returns, late filing of returns, late payment of tax and not retaining records for the required period
- Calculate corporation tax and compute gains on the sale of capital assets by companies
- Understand the capital gains implications of the sale of a business and the tax reliefs available to businesses.
Entry requirements
- AAT Level 3 qualification in accounts or a degree in accounting.

You will be assessed by external examination.
What does the course lead to?
Full membership of the AAT and entry for ACCA, ICAEW or CIMA qualifications is possible upon completion of the full qualification.
