What is an Access to University course?

If you’re aged 19 or over and want to study for a university-level course but don’t have the necessary qualifications, then our Access to University courses are perfect for you.

Access to University courses are aimed specifically at people who want to return to education – with the aim of helping them to unlock new career prospects.

The college offers a range of Access to University courses, providing routes onto various career pathways, in sectors including business and law, humanities, science, social work, sport and teacher training (primary education).

The courses last just one year meaning you’re able to move on to university quickly, fully-equipped with the skills needed to study at a higher-level. Upon completion, you will gain an Access to HE Diploma qualification, which is recognised by universities and employers alike.

Why Access to University at West Notts?

  • 1Make use of our fantastic higher-level facilities
As an Access to University student you’ll study at the Vision University Centre; meaning you’ll have access to brand new facilities, higher-level learning resources and PC suites. You’ll also be able to make use of the rest of the college’s facilities – from a restaurant exclusively for higher-level students, to a hair and beauty salon and theatre (so it’s not all work and no play!).
  • 2You could be eligible for financial help towards your learning
You may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help pay for your course tuition fees. The scheme has been introduced by the government, to help learners aged 19+ study for qualifications at Level 3 and above, that will improve their employability and develop high-level skills and knowledge.
  • 3Feel fully-supported while you study
Access to University students not only have the support of amazing tutors and student support coaches, but you can also take advantage of the college’s range of support teams, from the careers and employability team to our health and wellbeing services.
  • 4Stay at college and progress to university-level!
Once you’ve finished your Access to University course, you may choose to stay and study up to degree-level at the University Centre on our Derby Road campus, which is run by Nottingham Trent University. A number of our Access courses can be the stepping stone to one of the many foundation degrees and top-up awards offered by NTU.
