Music Technology - Level 3

Overview

Our Level 3 Music Technology course is for those aspiring to be involved in live sound engineering and stage management, studio based audio engineering, sequencing and composing, audio engineering and music synthesis.

The course will develop your understanding of the music industry and build knowledge of music business management. Based around real-world industry relevant projects, there are opportunities to work with music artists and producers both in the studio and in professional venues. Our team of expert composers, engineers, producers and technicians will give you a thorough grounding in a range of areas and develop valuable job skills and life skills.

On completion of the course students will be able to demonstrate:

  • Sound recording skills
  • Mixing and mastering skills
  • Sequencing and production skills
  • Live sound skills
  • Studio engineering skills
  • Music for visual media skills
  • Understanding of contextual issues relating to music technology

At interview, we will discuss with you your entry qualifications, experience and career goals. This, along with your audition, will form the basis of your starting point on the Level 3 programme. 

The diploma is a one-year programme. However, following successful completion of the diploma and appropriate achievement of other elements of the study programme, you may then be able to progress to a second year of study on the extended diploma.

Entry requirements

For the diploma you will need:

  • Four GCSEs with at least 4 points (grade C) including English or an appropriate equivalent OR
  • A relevant Level 2 diploma at merit level, and GCSE English with 4 points (grade C) or an appropriate equivalent plus a portfolio.
  • Music performance or music technology experience and an audition.

For the extended diploma you will need:

  • Five GCSEs with at least 4 points (grade C) including English or an appropriate equivalent OR
  • A relevant Level 2 diploma at merit level, and GCSE English with 4 points (grade C) or above, plus a portfolio.
  • Music performance or music technology experience and an audition.

You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course. You may also need to supply at least one written reference from a teacher or employer (in some cases two) and/or your current school or college report.

Mature students (those aged 21 or over) who do not have the qualifications required for entry may still be eligible, subject to an interview at which we will discuss all relevant experience, your portfolio of work and career goals.

* If you are aged 19-23 and studying your first Level 3 course then that course may be free. Please contact us for more details. If you are aged 19 or over and either studying a second Level 3 course or qualifying Level 4, 5 or 6 course you may be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the costs.

How long is the course?

The diploma is a one year course and the extended diploma is a two-year course.

After successful completion of the diploma study programme, and following appropriate advice and guidance, you may continue your study for a further year in order to achieve the full extended diploma.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment takes place through controlled assignments set by tutors and externally verified. 

You will take part in projects, practical workshops and performance.

What does the course lead to?

The diploma and extended diplomas are nationally recognised qualifications. The extended diploma at Level 3 is equivalent to three A Levels and will support an application to Higher Education as well as developing many of the wider skills required for progression to employment in related areas of work.

Progression opportunities include moving up to a higher level of study HND in Music available at the college.

Study programmes

It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification. What can I go on to study?

  • Following successful completion of the diploma study programme you may be able to progress to the extended diploma.
  • Following successful completion of the extended diploma you could progress to university-level qualifications such as a degree or HND in related area, or you could go on to further training or employment.
