Hairdressing - Intermediate Apprenticeship - Level 2


The Level 2 Diploma in Professional Hairdressing is a newly created qualification, based on employer needs and been designed by employers for learners wishing to gain an apprenticeship within the Hair Professional arena.

The Diploma will lead to the achievement of the Hairdressing Professional Standard, alongside the relevant functional skills and the End Point Assessment (EPA) module.

The high-quality, rigorous end-point assessment, can be delivered at a convenient time for your apprentice. 

Entry requirements

Individuals must already have sourced employment within the hairdressing sector, prior to applying for Apprenticeship in Hairdressing.

Start dates and fees

Age 16-18: Free

Over 19: £900

How long is the course?

18 months.

How will I be assessed?

Individuals will be required to attend Vision West Nottinghamshire College one day per week for the duration of the course, which will provide the opportunity to undertake practical assessments within the Revive salon and develop theoretical skills sets to meet qualification requirements.

Assessments will also be required within the individual’s workplace to sufficiently meet competency outcomes within the qualification.

Individuals are required to produce a portfolio of evidence, which will contain a variety of assessments covering the criteria stipulated by the awarding body for the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing (QCF)

Assessments may include:

  • Observations held in the working environment
  • Reflective accounts
  • Witness statements
  • Work products
  • End Point Assessment

You will plan your assessments with your assessor prior to the assessment taking place.

You will be required to complete an online or paper based test for both Functional Skills elements. 

The qualification also includes an element of End Point Assessment (EPA).

The assessment events include:

  • Practical observation where the learner will demonstrate that they can complete a range of services on at least two models to industry standards and within commercial timings.
  • Oral questioning where the learner’s consultation skills, communication skills, safe working practices, professionalism, values and behaviours will also be assessed by oral questioning. 

What does the course lead to?

Learners achieving the Diploma in Professional Hairdressing can gain employment in a salon as a Hairdresser.

  • 201 Consultation
  • 202 Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • 203 Cut hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
  • 204 Style and finish hair using a range of techniques to achieve a variety of looks
  • 205 Colour and lighten hair using a range of techniques


  • 206 Perming hair
  • 207 Hair relaxing treatments and techniques
  • 208 Hair extension services

Learners achieving the Diploma in Professional Barbering can gain employment in a salon as a Barber. They will cover the following units:


  • 201 Consultation
  • 202 Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • 209 Cutting hair using barbering techniques to create a variety of looks
  • 210 Style and finish men’s hair
  • 211 Cut facial hair into shape
  • 212 Provide shaving services

Study programmes

It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification. What can I go on to study?

The qualification provides the opportunity to progress to the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing, Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing (Combined Hair Types), or Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering.
