Diploma in Theatrical and Media Make-up - Level 3

Overview

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for theatrical and media make-up and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a make-up artist in the media, theatre, performing arts, fashion and photographic industries. 
Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to provide a wide range of creative make-up services in media, theatre and fashion and photographic settings.
Learners will also style and fit hair piece and apply false eyelashes, as well as understand the related cosmetic science that underpins the subject. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are highly valued by employers. Problem-solving and research skills will also be developed.

Entry requirements

GCSE English language with at least grade 4/C or equivalent plus a Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy or a Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Make-up Artistry and attendance at summer school. 

You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course. You may also need to supply at least one written reference from a teacher or employer (in some cases two) and/or your current school or college report.

The table below shows you when the course starts. You may be charged a fee for your course depending on your age and circumstances. If you are aged 24 or over and studying a qualifying Level 3, 4 or 5 course you may be able to apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to cover the costs.

If you are aged 19 or over and either studying a second Level 3 course or qualifying Level 4, 5 or 6 course you may be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the costs.

How will I be assessed?

You'll be assessed via a mix of externally set, internally graded practical assessments, as well as externally-marked exams and externally set, internally graded synoptic assessments.

What does the course lead to?

Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become members of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) or Federation of Holistic Therapies (FHT).

Study programmes

It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification.
