Diploma in Skills for Hospitality, Employment and Further Learning - Entry Level

Overview

An introductory course for learners who want to explore and learn the basics of hospitality and catering. The course is a mix of vocational and personal development units to help learners understand job opportunities within the sector. 

This is a full-time course aimed at providing you with the basic skills and knowledge required to progress to further training as a professional cook/chef in a range of settings such as restaurants and events catering.

As part of the course you will have the opportunity to work both in the kitchen and restaurant of our staff-only dining restaurant, Relish.

Entry requirements

At least grade 1/G in English and maths. You will need to demonstrate a passion for the industry.

You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course. You may also need to supply at least one written reference from a teacher or employer (in some cases two) and/or your current school or college report.

Location

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed throughout the course by practical assessments and small written tasks.

What will I study?

You will study a mix of practical and theoretical units to prepare you for work in the industry and train under the guidance of qualified and experienced chefs.

Study programmes

It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification.
