Extended Certificate in Construction and the Built Environment - Level 2
Overview
The construction industry has never been so varied and dynamic and this course offers you the opportunity to develop your existing knowledge of the industry.
You will learn to help meet the demands of employers in the construction and the built environment sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. This course is designed for those who want to take their career within construction to a higher technical level to pursue a career within architectural technology, surveying, construction management or building control, to name a few.
One of the main purposes of BTEC qualifications is to help learners to progress, ultimately, to employment within the Construction and Building Services Industry. Employers require learners to have certain technical skills as well as knowledge and understanding but they also require employees to demonstrate employability skills. These skills enable learners to adapt to the roles needed to survive in the global economy and enhance their effectiveness in the workplace. Employability skills include: self-management, team working, business and customer awareness, problem solving, communication, basic literacy and numeracy, a positive attitude to work and the use of IT.
Entry requirements
- A minimum of at least GCSE grade 4/C in English and maths.
- Completion of Level 1 in construction or relevant foundation construction award including English and maths.

You will also need to dedicate time to research and work outside the classroom.
How will I be assessed?
The Level 2 Extended Certificate in Construction and the Built Environment includes two externally-assessed units.
Other assessment methods include:
- written reports or essays
- work-based projects
- PowerPoint presentations
- recordings of interviews
- the creation of design documents.
What does the course lead to?
The primary aim of this qualification is to help you prepare for progression into further learning and training in the Construction & Building Services Directorate at Vision West Nottinghamshire College.
What will I study?
This qualification is built on four mandatory units that form the fundamental knowledge and understanding of construction principles.
You will study the following units:
- Construction Technology
- Construction & Design
- Scientific & Mathematical Applications for Construction
- Sustainability in Construction
- Construction Processes and Operations
- The Construction Industry
Study programmes
It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification.
