If you’re interested in the world of 3D printing and CAD design, you can sign-up for our design and manufacture project. Using the college’s state-of-the-art 3D printers, you can be part of a team that designing, prototyping and machine-building tool parts to be used by different departments across the college.

For Level 1 and 2 Fabrication and Welding students, you have the opportunity to take part in the college’s bespoke workshop where, under the supervision of the workshop co-ordinator, you’ll be guided through making an assortment of different products for sale at the college and beyond such as exhaust pipes and wood-burning stoves.

The items you produce will be designed in accordance to a design-brief and will be personalised according to the needs of your client. As well as gaining plenty of technical expertise, you’ll have the opportunity to hone your customer care skills and communication.

This learning company is open to learners of all levels, and you’ll have the opportunity to be a part of every stage of the design and manufacturing process, from designing the product, to creating a prototype, and finally to constructing and completing a professional, saleable product. It’s an invaluable opportunity to put your theoretical knowledge to the test and get a taste of what it’s like to work in the design engineering industry.


Our facilities

Our new robotics and automation suite is second-to-none and is home to a range of robots from the UK’s number one robotics company: ABB. We’re the only college in the country with Emau robots. We are working in partnership with Italy-based robotics specialist, Comau. This equipment will be pre-loaded with learning lessons and outcomes to teach automation and robotics at various levels. We also work with the electrical controls specialist, PNE Controls, who are upgrading our HAS Automation assembly line, currently in OL114.

There’s a huge range of equipment for mechanical and automotive engineering, like the best Festo hydraulics maintenance equipment in the region and six mechanical assembly rigs to teach mechanical fitting, with motors, gears, pulleys, drives and shafts. The centre also boasts a dedicated LRC and computer suites, hybrid workstations, 3D printers, and more.
