Overview

The Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping provides an entry point for anyone wishing to start a career in accountancy or finance. It may also support career progression for those already in employment by formally recognising their skills in manual bookkeeping.

This qualification is suitable for those already working in finance, those returning to work after a break or those wishing to change career. The qualification is open to those who are working and those who are not currently in employment. It also offers progression for those who have started studying accountancy and bookkeeping with AAT.

The course fee can either be paid in full or in four instalments.

If you wish to pay in instalments, you will be required to pay 25% (£181) of the total fee on the day of enrolment and a Direct Debit mandate would then need to be completed to enable the college to collect a further three payments of £181 monthly. The payments will be taken on the date you choose on the Direct Debit mandate form.

The course fee includes tuition, resources and the first atempt at the exam. You will need to pay for your AAT membership directly to AAT - this currently costs £68.

What will I study?

The purpose of the Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping is to ensure that you gain solid bookkeeping skills necessary for most finance roles. This qualification comprises two mandatory units:

Introduction to Bookkeeping:

  1. Understand how to set up bookkeeping systems
  2. Process customer transactions
  3. Process supplier transactions
  4. Process receipts and payments
  5. Process transactions into the ledger accounts.

Principles of Bookkeeping Controls:

  1. Use control accounts
  2. Reconcile a bank statement with the cash book
  3. Use the journal
  4. Produce trial balances.

Entry requirements

Level 2 in English Language and Maths (such as GCSE or functional skills). If you don't have the entry requirements, we will assess your skills on a 1:1 basis and you may be required to complete an online assessment.

This course is for learners aged 19+ only. If you are aged 16-18 and wishing to pursue a career in accounting, please consider the Accounting and Business - Level 2/3 or an apprenticeship.


How long is the course?

The length of the course depends on whether you join the daytime group or the evening group.

  • Day group – January 2025 – 1 day per week for 18 weeks
  • Evening group – September 2025 TBC.

How will I be assessed?

Two external online assessments.


What does the course lead to?

AAT qualifications are recognised by employers as practical and technical qualifications that prepare students for the world of work and for working specifically in accountancy and finance roles.
