Introduction to NCS

Our NCS programme is open to students of Vision West Nottinghamshire College as well as young people from other local schools, colleges and those who are in work or apprenticeships. Our programme is based across two regions; Mansfield/Ashfield and surrounding areas, and Bassetlaw – including Worksop, Retford and Doncaster. Due to this large area we will deliver from two bases over summer – Vision West Nottinghamshire College in Mansfield and North Notts College in Worksop. You will automatically be assigned to the programme nearest to you.

NCS is a four-week programme during the summer holidays. The programme runs Monday to Friday so you will still have your weekends free. It’s split into three phases (outlined below).

Additionally, before you come away with us on NCS we will invite you to a number of ‘keep warm’ events. These will run throughout spring and into summer up until our first departure. Attending these events will give you a chance to find out more about the programme, meet other people who will be going away with you, meet our staff and ask us any questions you want to. They’re great fun and we recommend that you attend at least one event so that we can get to know you before the departure date.

Phase 2 – Skills

(one week residential, Monday to Friday)

Our provisional phase 2 venue is Loughborough College where you’ll experience independent living as well as taking part in workshops focusing on employability, community engagement and team work.

Please note: transport is provided to and from the residential sites and all meals are provided while you are away other than lunch on the Monday as you will be travelling and need a packed lunch.

Phase 3 – Social action

(Two weeks living at home and travelling in each day)

You will be based at either Vision West Nottinghamshire College, Mansfield or North Notts College, Worksop for week three - depending on where you live. The location for week four will depend on what you and your team decide to do for the social action project).

Phase 3 involves planning and delivering a social action project in your local community. You will be based at home during these two weeks and meet up with your team during the day. You will spend one week planning and then one week delivering your social action project. This could be anything from volunteering at a community centre for elderly or disabled people, collecting donations for homeless young people, creating a video or campaign to raise awareness of an issue in your community, holding a gig or fun day to raise money and awareness for a local charity. As long as the project benefits your local community it is entirely up to you and your team what you do. Don’t worry, we’ll be there to give you plenty of advice and support along the way.

More about NCS at Vision West Nottinghamshire College

Our programme focuses on team work, problem solving and developing transferable skills that will be useful for a range of future careers. There is also a strong emphasis on community engagement, understanding local issues and developing the mind-set and skills to be able to not only deliver a successful NCS social action project but to be active citizens in the future.

Our programmes are extremely varied and each one offers a range of different activities – here are just some of the sessions you might get to experience, although each programme is unique:

  • Human Robot Wars - turn one of your team into a robot and guide them to defeat the other teams
  • Interview success workshop – understand different interview types, questions and how to prepare
  • Canoeing and raft building
  • Graduate opportunities – find out about different opportunities that are open to you as an NCS graduate including employment opportunities and the chance to volunteer abroad.
  • BBQ – (weather permitting)
  • Visits from local community organisations – you’ll get to meet people from local community organisations to find out more about the issues people in our communities face. This could include the founder of a homeless centre for young people or a fundraising officer for a charity that works with blind and visually impaired people
  • Climbing and abseiling
  • The opportunity to complete the John Muir Award and get involved in conservation
  • Rocket launch – work together as a team to build and launch a rocket
  • Bushcraft.

This is just a basic introduction to the NCS programme with Vision West Nottinghamshire College, once you are signed up to come away with us you will receive a welcome pack with more detailed information and will be invited to an information evening and pre-departure events where you can meet other people who will also be going on NCS.

If you want to find out more about the programme in the meantime and what it’s actually like to come away with us please check out the videos below which was made by young people on our summer 2016 programme. They tell it far better than we can!
